This lithograph print references the abstract images of wireless waves or flying shapes by the early 20th-century Russian avant-garde suprematist artist Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935). Finlay had said that Malevich obviously pictured himself as ‘the best aeroplane’ and that the victim in the dog-fight might be the artist's rival the Soviet architect Valdimir Tatlin (1885-1953). It is a collaboration with the lettering artist Michael Harvey (1931-2013) and was published by the Finlay's own Wild Hawthorn Press in an edition of 300. Five of his prints given from the David & Liza Brown bequest in 2014 are a great addition to Pier Arts Centre collection.
