This watercolour and pastel by the French artist George Rouault (1871 - 1978) was exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in London from the collection the renowned recently-deceased patron and collector, Sir Michael Sadler (1861-1943) in January-February 1944 when it was purchased by the Contemporary Art Society from its Foreign Fund and presented to the Tate Gallery (along with Modigliani's Caryatid) in the same year.
