On graduating from St Martin's School of Art in 1966, Barry Flanagan held an exhibition at the Rowan Gallery, London. Departing from sculptural practice of his tutors, notably using a variety of unconventional materials, like sand and wet plaster in cloth skins where the shapes would virtually make themselves, his work was regarded as highly innovative. Sand Muslin 2 (1966) was acquired by the flamboyant art critic David Sylvester (1924-2001) for the Contemporary Art Society, by whom was originally presented to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1972 and transferred to the Tate Gallery in 1983. Sand Muslin 1 (1966) was acquired by the Arts Council (AC1061).
