Nadia (Nadezhda Leontievna) Benois was the Russian-born mother of the actor Peter Ustinov (1921-2004) and her father was once owner of Leonardo's 'Benois Madonna' until 1914 (now in Hermitage, St Petersburg). She drew the scene near Saint-Maxime-sur-Mer, Var, South of France in 1934 and painted it back in London in 1935. It was purchased by J. B. Manson for the Contemporary Art Society ahead of her show Arthur Tooth & Sons, London in October-November, 1936 when it was reproduced in the Studio (CXII).
