The sculptor Gaudier-Brzeska was an important pioneer in the revival of carving in sculpture and like many of his fellow sculptors, spent time studying the pieces from around the world in the British Museum. This ink drawing of Man on a Horse (1913), with the elongated form of the horse has been compared to ancient Chinese bronzes on display there. Likewise, the simple, sinuous line also recalls the ancient figures etched into the English landscape at such sites as Uffington and Cerne Abbas.
