Ownership history:

Purchased by the Contemporary Art Society, before 1914; presented to the Tate Gallery, 1924
This Victorian portrait is one of the oldest pictures to be acquired by the then recently-formed Contemporary Art Society. It was purchased from a living artist, 5 years before his death, even though he had painted it 50 years previously. It was therefore an unusual acquisition for the new organisation that was to champion young artists.
