Jane Harris (1956 - 2022)

Biography

Jane Harris (b. Swanage, Dorset, UK 1956 - d. France 2022) studied at Bournemouth College of Art (1975-76); Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (1976-77); Brighton Polytechnic (1977-79); Slade School of Fine Art (1979-81 and Goldsmiths College, Univeristy of London (1989-91), where she later lectured until 2006. She was one of Britain’s most significant abstract painters, who for 30 years explored, through a set of self-imposed rules, the perceptual qualities of the ellipse. Since 2006 she had lived and worked in rural Périgord, France, with her husband, the sculptor Jiří Kratochvil, and their son. A survey of her work was held at FRAC MÈCA Bordeaux (2023).
