Funds bequeathed by Mrs H. K. Morton to the Contemporary Art Society; purchased by the Tate Gallery from the Mrs H. K. Morton bequest, 1969

Patrick Caulfield uses the motif of several pots, vases and plates in order to create a bold multicoloured painting whilst also including his characteristic black outlines in what became his signature style. The pottery is depicted from different viewpoints whereby the objects at the bottom are seen as if from above; those in the centre are seen at eye level; and those towards the top are shown from below – a perspective device which emphasises the effect of a large number of stacked objects. Pottery (1969) was exhibited at the Pop Art exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London in the summer of 1969 and purchased by the Tate Gallery with Funds bequeathed by Mrs H. K. Morton to the Contemporary Art Society in the same year.
