Biography

Enrico Cappellini opened a small workshop in Carugo, a small town near Como and Milan, Italy producing traditional pieces of furniture according to the artisan traditions of the Brianza area. In 1977 Giulio Cappellini joined his father’s company bringing innovation and launched the brand on the international market. He launched Sistemi: a new way of conceiving cabinets, combining function and aesthetics, also in a serial production in 1981 and in 1986 the collaboration he collaborated with Shiro Kuramata to launch the Progetti Compiuti collection, one of the most iconic pieces in the history of design. Jasper Morrison exhibits the prototype of his Thinking Man’s Chair, in London in 1987, which was later puchesed by the Contemporary Art Society for its Special Collection Scheme, with the aid of Arts Council Lottery Funding and presented to Manchester Art Gallery in 2005. In 1988, originally produced as a limited series, the iconic Embryo Chair by Marc Newson becomes a permanent piece of the Cappellini catalogue.
