Morag Ballard (1961)

Biography

Morag Ballard (b. London 1961) studied at Chelsea School of Art before studying sculpture at Bath Academy of Art at Corsham (1982-85). In 1983 on a Gane Trust Travel Scholarship for sculpture, she went to Carrara, Italy and in 1986, she worked at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice. After a period of having a studio in Scotland, Ballard moved to Penzance, Cornwall in 1991 where she was inspired by the St Ives school of artists of the 1930s, '40s and '50s; her paintings are primarily abstract, but she often incorporates forms derived from the reality of the Cornish landscape and architecture and the effects of its light and the sea. Since 1991 she has frequently exhibited with England & Co., London and her first solo show in Cornwall was at Lemon Street Gallery, Truro (2013) and more recently she has held solo shows at Andelli Art, Ellie Jonses's home gallery in Wells, Somerset (2017 & 2021).
