Michael Brick (1946 - 2014)

Biography

Michael Brick (b. Leicester, UK 1946 - d. Newcastle, UK 2014) studied fine art at Newcastle University where he eventually taught. He was with the talented group of students, among them Stephen Buckley, Bryan Ferry, Tim Head, Mark Lancaster and Sean Scully, who were influenced by their teacher Richard Hamilton. Brick worked with Hamilton at one point as his assistant, and did the same three summers in succession for Ian Stephenson, both of whom were committed to abstraction. He won a Granada Fellowship in Painting at York University. His group exhibitions included John Moores Exhibition, Liverpool, 1978, where he was a prizewinner; Surfaces at Postgraduate Gallery, Hull, 1979; Centrum Beeldende Kunst, Groningen, Netherlands, 1988; and the Newcastle Group show The Northern Lights, DLI Museum & Arts Centre, Durham, and tour, 1990.  He had a solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, London, in 1971, and an association first with the Hester van Royen Gallery, then with Anne Berthoud Gallery, who included a series of solo exhibitions from 1981.
