Elizabeth Raeburn (1943)

Biography

Elizabeth Raeburn (b. UK 1943) initially worked in music, book publishing and then as a teacher. From 1973 she studied in studio pottery at Harrow School of Art and spent a brief time as a production student in David Leach’s workshop. In 1975, she established her own pottery in Somerset with Rodney Lawrence. Since 1981 Raeburn has concentrated on handbuilt Raku. She has held residencies in Ascham School, Sydney, Australia (1991);  West Pennard C of E Primary School, Somerset (1995); Ladymead Community School, Taunton, Somerst (1996); and Norton-sub-Hamdon CE Primary School. Somerste (2004). She had a solo exhibition at the Dan Klein Gallery, London (1981) and has exhibited widely in ceramics shows at home and abroad including the Oxford Gallery (1986) the Galerie für Keramik und Kalligraphie in Hamburg, Galerie Besson in London and Galerie Ortilles-Fourcat, Paris.  From 1992 to 1993 she won two prizes at an exhibition at the National Museum of History, Taipei, with two pieces being acquired by the museum.  From 1997 to 1998 she had work shown at Sotheby's Exhibition of Contemporary Decorative Arts and was commissioned by Harvard University for a presentation at the book launch of The Quest for Longitude.  In 2003 she was one of four of David Leach's students whose work was included in his retrospective exhibition which toured the UK from 2003 to 2004.
