On the occasion of their participation to the Contemporary Art Society and Whitechapel Gallery touring exhibition Twixt Two Worlds‘ at Towner, Eastbourne, curated by Gaia Tedone, Jane and Louise Wilson (b.1967, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England) discuss their practice in conversation with Elisabetta Fabrizi, Curator of Screen-based Media at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle.
Departing from their first moving image work included in the exhibition Hypnotic Suggestion 505 (1993), the artists trace the evolution of their research and thinking over the last few decades. They specifically expand on the project Unfolding of the Aryan Papers inspired by the Kubrick Archive and commissioned by Elisabetta Fabrizi when she was Head of Exhibitions at the BFI Gallery, South Bank, London.
As part of the Whitechapel Gallery’s on-going programme to open up public and private collections to wider audiences, the Gallery presented a curatorial collaboration with the Contemporary Art Society. For a period of 12 months from September 2013, the Contemporary Art Society presented a series of four displays at the Whitechapel Gallery, drawing on works from collections held by the Contemporary Art Society’s membership of 65 publicly funded museums and galleries across England. Focusing on the North West, East Coast, Midlands and South, the displays used the founding principles of many of these institutions – philanthropic giving – as a central theme.
