I have been an admirer of the work of American artist, Sarah Sze since I first became aware of her work at the end of the 1990s, so I was a bit grumpy when I went to Victoria Miro gallery to see the thronging crowds bypassing her show in order to get to Grayson Perry’s tapestries on the top floor gallery. Over the past decade Sze has established an international reputation for her extraordinary ephemeral installations where everyday objects are meticulously constructed by hand to form often immense, intricate installations which are legible as complex mapping systems or spatial archaeologies of human activity excavated in the present. At Victoria Miro’s gallery just off Old Street, the artist has created – in the words of the gallery’s Press Release – ‘a kind of laboratory where processes of observation, examination and exploration are in progress’ with assemblages forming temporary, residual sites offering accumulations of evidence for an enquiry unspecified. If you are heading for Grayson Perry’s show, do please make sure you take a moment to enjoy Sze’s extraordinary creations – a taste of things to come when the artist represents the United States at the 55th edition of Venice Biennale next year.
