Dear Members,
We hope you are having an enjoyable and restful Summer!
Our forthcoming Members’ Programme will be with you in early September, so be sure to look out for it and we look forward to seeing you at as many events as your diary permits.
We are working to launch a new initiative, Contemporary Art Society Recommends, which will highlight ten important public exhibitions across the UK each month. August’s edition will just go out to you, our valued Members, and we invite you to tell us what you think.
From September Contemporary Art Society Recommends will go to our entire network. We hope you will find it to be an insightful and useful tool. In the meantime, please feel free to give us your feedback on the first edition as it would be greatly appreciated.
Please send us your thoughts by email to: membership@contemporaryartsociety.org
We look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you again in the Autumn.
All the best,
Dida, Ally, Henry and Sarah

REGIONAL
Eva Rothschild, Hot Touch, The Hepworth Wakefield
21 May – 9 October 2011
Hot Touch presents a group of new and recent sculptures and photographs by Eva Rothschild. Her sculptures are made from a range of materials including fabric, leather and wood, bringing together the hand-made and the industrially produced. The works often combine the forms and strategies of modernist art – squares, triangles, holes and repetition – with an array of visual associations and symbols, such as totemic columns of piled heads and draped snakes.
Mark Titchner, BE TRUE TO YOUR OBLIVION, The New Art Gallery Walsall
8 July – 10 September 2011
www.thenewartgallerywalsall.org.uk
Mark Titchner works in a wide variety of media, often combining new technologies with more traditional craft techniques. An overarching interest is the way in which communication engenders belief. Text commonly features within his work and he draws from a wide range of sources including song lyrics, advertising slogans, corporate mission statements and political manifestos.
Maurizio Anzeri, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art
25 June – 2 October 2011
www.balticmill.com
Maurizio Anzeri’s unusual working process brings together found photographs and embroidery. Using portraits from the 1930s and 1940s collected at flea markets, Anzeri overlays abstract designs by sewing intricately patterned threads directly onto the photographic surface. Obscuring part of the photograph he both hides and heightens certain features of the face. His precise juxtapositions transform the discarded image, giving his portraits a disquieting and psychological presence.
A Million Miles from Home, Folkestone Triennial, Folkstone
25 June – 25 September, 2011
www.folkestonetriennial.org.uk
Curated by Andrea Schlieker, the title and theme of the second Folkestone Triennial is A Million Miles from Home. This refers to the sense of being between worlds, of displacement and separation, of transience and having to find bearings in an unknown elsewhere. The Triennial is the flagship project of the Creative Foundation, a charity based in Folkestone which is leading a large scale renewal of the old town area close to the scenic harbour.
