It is with enormous sadness that we mark the death yesterday of Sir Anthony Caro OM CBE RA, one of the great figures of 20th century art in Britain and internationally. Anthony Caro’s 1962 sculpture, Early One Morning, was purchased by the Contemporary Art Society in 1965 from the exhibition British Sculpture in the Sixties and presented to Tate the same year. The Contemporary Art Society presented two further works by the artist to UK museums: Choca (1978) was presented to Portsmouth Museum in 1979, and Writing Piece, Therefore (1978) was presented to the Laing Gallery, Newcastle, in 1982. As a teacher at Central St Martins, Anthony Caro influenced successive generations of artists in this country; since the 1960s Britain has been recognised internationally for ceaseless innovation in the medium of sculpture and Anthony Caro was a key figure in that development. He will be much missed.
