Biography
The Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (GoMA), part of Glasgow Museums, opened in 1996 in a neo-Classical building, previously Stirling's Library, and before that the home of the tobacco lord, William Cunningham. Positioned at the heart of the city centre, the classical façade displays a colourful mosaic by the sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle, installed for the building's new life as an art gallery. Fourteen of her works are also in the collection, having been gifted through the Contmporary Art Society in 2012 by Eric and Jean Cass. The collection focuses on post-war art and design.
Works by David Hockney, Sebastiao Salgado and Andy Warhol are shown with Scottish artists such as John Bellany and Ken Currie. GoMA is focused on developing its contemporary collection, recently acquiring works by Jim Lambie, Douglas Gordon, Graham Fagen, Lucy Skaer, Ilana Halperin and Toby Paterson. The Contemporary Art Society donated 3 works by Rabiya Choudhry from its crowd-funded campaign, the Rapid Response Fund in 2020.
Having received the Art Fund International Award, GoMA is in the process of developing a remarkable international collection in partnership with the independent arts organisation The Common Guild. The gallery shows a number of temporary exhibitions throughout the year and hosts a series of artists' projects that seek to address contemporary and social issues.
