The contemporary collection continues to focus on painting, with works by Callum Innes, Ian McKeever, George Shaw and Simon Callery.

Birmingham has one of the finest collections of metalwork in Europe, with pieces from forty-five contemporary makers including Michael Rowe, Simone ten Hompel, Ane Christensen, Hiroshi Suzuki and Koji Hatakeyama.

Birmingham hosts a number of temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The exhibitions have a particular emphasis on education in line with the gallery’s formal remit to deliver art and design education to the schools of the city. Birmingham is part of a consortium with Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Ikon Gallery,
which has been awarded Art Fund International funding to purchase major contemporary works to add to their collections. This partnership is bringing a renewed energy to the participating museums.

Editor’s note:
A fantastic neo-classical building, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery has an equally impressive collection — most known for its holdings of Pre-Raphaelite work and contemporary silverware. Take your time wandering through the large gallery rooms and enjoy a moment of respite in the ornate Edwardian Tea Rooms.
