Join us for studio visits with three artists at Islington Mill in Salford.
Maurice Carlin is a Manchester-based artist. His work, in a variety of media, often takes place in the public domain and draws attention to the underneath and overlooked elements within the day to day world that largely go unnoticed. For example, a recent collaborative film with artist David Medalla called Blue (Sleep Mode) depicts Medalla wandering through the streets of Salford at night with a mobile projector, illuminating details of the walls and surfaces of the city. Following a five week artist residency in Beijing, Carlin is currently planning a month-long installation to coincide with the Manchester International Festival in July, and will talk about preparations for this ambitious project during the visit.
Sophie Clements and Alistair McClymont are both based in London, but are temporarily in residence at Islington Mill and will be exploring new ideas there over the summer months.
While exploring many ideas in their individual practices, Clements and McClymont share an interest in science and the physical laws that govern the material world. For example, in a recent work called There after Clements made clever use of film technology to allow the viewer to experience different materials in an unnatural state, both visually and sonically. Similarly, in Everything we are capable of seeing McClymont reproduced a rainbow using a horticultural mister and a 2.5Kw light that replicate the role of the rain and the sun in producing naturally occurring rainbows. Members may remember that both works were shown in a group show called Brittle Crazie Glassie at Islington Mill during The Manchester Contemporary 2012.
Alistair McClymont studied Fine Art at Hull School of Art (1997-2000) and completed an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, London (2003-5). Recent solo exhibitions include CAM Raleigh, NC (USA) and noshowspace (London). He is represented by Man&Eve.
Sophie Clements is a visual artist based in London. Recent group exhibitions include Artificial Garden (Seoul Museum of Art) and Brittle Crazie Glasse (Islington Mill, Salford). She is represented by Man&Eve.
