To start at Manchester Art Gallery, Mosley Street, Manchester M2 3JL
Join us for tours of two exhibitions.
Curator Natasha Howes will lead a tour of Joana Vasconcelos at Manchester Art Gallery. Fresh from her success representing Portugal at the 55th Venice Biennale, this major new show features over twenty of the Portuguese artist’s most significant sculptures, which fill the gallery’s major exhibition spaces, adorn the exterior of the gallery and permeate the whole gallery building. It includes new and recent works – most on show in the UK for the first time. The exhibition also features the world premiere of a monumental new textile work, specially commissioned for the exhibition.
Artists Dan Dubowitz and Alan Ward will lead a tour of their exhibition, Citizen Manchester, presented across Manchester Art Gallery and the newly renovated Central Library and Town Hall Extension. In 2011, in the midst of a worldwide recession with widespread cuts in public spending, Manchester embarked on a visionary restoration project to transform Central Library and the Town Hall Extension. Early on in this major civic enterprise Dubowitz and Ward were given privileged and open access to witness this transformational period in the life of two of Manchester’s iconic buildings. Through large-format photographs, interviews and research into the city archives over a period of 18 months, they captured the moment when the city’s populace had been locked out and the spaces reduced to their merest shells.
