Join us for studio visits with two Manchester-based artists.
Using film, photography, drawing and installation, Maeve Rendle makes art works that resist assuming a concrete form. She invents tasks that will enable her to put her subject to work, and through visual documentation captures the unravelling thinking, working, reciprocating essence of the subject. Works of literature and film have served to inspire and aid the creation of these tasks that are continually informed by intuitive responses to the materials and spaces she encounters daily. Rendle seeks to portray everyday thoughts and feelings and to hold them up as open ended processes, that continue to process whether being watched and experienced or not.
Rendle was born in London in 1980 and lives and works in Manchester. She studied at Nottingham Trent University (2003) and Manchester School of Art (2005). Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and projects including the Innsbruck International, The Way We Do Art Now at Tanya Leighton Gallery in Berlin and Unframe at the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool. She was long-listed for the Northern Art Prize in 2010
Noel Clueit explores the relationships and disparate threads between objects, language, history and representation. Using a variety of media including video, painting and animation, he takes secondary sources as a point of departure for investigation into the perception and authority of cultural artefacts. The research he undertakes is led by misquotes, soundbites, screen shots, google images and out-of-print books. Clueit deconstructs his formal art education with the intention of understanding at what point different modes of gaining knowledge second hand misconstrue, homogenise or compromise the subject in its original form. This in turn informs and loops back to feed new ideas for work.
Clueit is based in Manchester. He graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Cumbria Institute of the Arts in 2007 and his work has featured in exhibitions at MalgrasǀNaudet (Manchester), CIRCA Projects (Newcastle upon Tyne), Workplace Gallery (Gateshead) and Supercollider Contemporary Art Projects (Blackpool).
