Join us for a series of exclusive events in Todmorden and Leeds. The day will include:
– A studio visit in Todmorden (West Yorkshire) with artist Matthew Houlding. Matthew’s sculptures and collages draw us into a fantastic, retro-futuristic world inspired by architectural forms and models, modernism and a childhood spent in East Africa. Solo exhibitions of his work include The Chemosphere (New Art Gallery Walsall, 2010), and Sons of Pioneers (Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool and The De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill on Sea, 2009).
– A tour of Gary Hume (Flashback from the Arts Council Collection) with Sarah Brown (Curator of Exhibitions) at Leeds Art Gallery. Gary Hume first found international fame in the early 1990s, with his series of bold, abstract ‘door paintings’. As one of the YBAs, his work was in Charles Saatchi’s now famous Sensation (1997) exhibition and he has since exhibited internationally, becoming best known for vibrant, large scale paintings, executed in planes of bold, glossy household paint.
– Finally, we will move next door to the Henry Moore Institute for a tour of the first solo exhibition in a British public gallery of the artist Michael Dean. Born in Newcastle in 1977, Dean is an emerging artist who works with sculpture and writing to explore the limits of both. Entitled Government, this exhibition will feature recent and newly commissioned work. Pavel Pyś (Exhibitions & Displays Curator) will lead the tour, providing a unique insight into Dean’s practice.
