Studio Visit and Reception: Ben Jeans Houghton at Globe Gallery

22 November 2011

18.30—20.30

North Member Programme, Studio Visit

Globe Gallery
53-57 Blandford Square
Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 4HZ

A Fine Art graduate of Northumbria University, Ben Jeans Houghton maintains a diverse practice in various fields, including film, sculpture, performance, drawing and writing, turning to whichever is most appropriate to explore and realize his ideas.

In 2009, he presented the performative installation, On The Ark and I in the exhibition A Duck for Mr Darwin at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. Part-recreated studio, part-taxonomic display, part-extended performance, the work comprised the artists’ lifelong amassed collection of objects which he returned to and archived throughout the course of the show.

This year, Jeans Houghton was offered a year-long studio residency in Globe Gallery, Newcastle. Join us for this special opportunity to visit the studio and hear Jeans Houghton discuss his latest projects, which include a photographic edition and sister publication produced in collaboration with CIRCA Contemporary Art Projects and a new film commissioned by Ideas Tap London.

The evening will also be a chance to view the latest exhibitions at Globe Gallery, which has recently relocated into a disused bank in the centre of Newcastle. The programme includes an exhibition of recent graduates from the region’s universities; a presentation of works from the Business Collectors’ Network collection; and a selection of art for sale from the Globe Gallery Plan Chest.
