This seminar will take place three times a year and is designed to provide the informed and established collector with further insight into the contemporary art market, in addition to those looking to broaden a basic understanding of collecting.

For the first edition, join Joanna Thornberry, Associate Director at Lisson Gallery, for a discussion about the importance of artist liaison within a major commercial gallery.

The discussion will explore the intricacies of the intimate working relationships required to support artists in bringing important works of art to market. Of particular relevance will be the multifaceted nature of the role, which is by turns critical, practical and promotional.

Joanna completed her BA in the History of Art at Glasgow University and later completed an MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art.  Having worked for many years at Anthony d’Offay Gallery, Joanna went on to work as an Associate Director with Timothy Taylor Gallery, Stuart Shave/Modern Art and most recently the Lisson Gallery. Over the years, Joanna has worked with artists as varied as Richard Long, Diana Thater, Howard Hodgkin, Martin Maloney, Rachel Whiteread, Bridget Riley, Fiona Rae and, most recently, Julian Opie, Jason Martin and Richard Deacon.

The discussion will be followed by an overview of recent art market developments, as well as a look ahead at the season to come. A key focus will be the forthcoming art fairs and we will give our top tips for buying at these events.

The evening will end with an informal drinks reception.
