We are very pleased to invite our Curators of Decorative Art for an exclusive studio visit, including cake and coffee, with Edmund de Waal at his premises in West Norwood, South London. Edmund de Waal is generously supporting the Contemporary Art Society’s Omega Fund, which purchases works of decorative art to place in museum collections across the UK.
We will meet at the Contemporary Art Society, 59 Central Street, for a light lunch at 12.30 before heading to the studio together for the visit 14.30 – 16.00.

About Edmund de Waal
Edmund de Waal is an artist and writer. Born in 1964, de Waal is best known for his large scale installations of porcelain vessels, which are informed by his passion for architecture, space and sound.
De Waal’s work has been exhibited throughout the UK and internationally with exhibitions at Espace Muraille, Geneva (2017); Frieze Art Fair, London; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (2016); Kunsthaus, Graz (2016); Galerie Max Hetzler (2016); Gagosian Gallery, Beverley Hills (2016); Royal Academy of Arts, London (2015); Pier Arts Centre, Orkney (2015); Turner Contemporary, Margate (2014); Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (2013); Gagosian Gallery, New York (2013); Waddesdon Manor (2012); Alan Cristea Gallery (2012); Tate Britain (2009); Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge and MIMA, Middlesbrough (2007); New Art Centre (2007); Millgate Museum (2006); Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House (2005); National Museum Cardiff (2005) and the Geoffrey Museum, London (2002). Among his permanent public works are the collector (for Paul) (2015) and Signs & Wonders (2009), both at the V&A; an idea (for the journey) (2013) at the Rijksmuseum; a local history (2012) at the University of Cambridge and a sounding line (2007) at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire.
Edmund de Waal has also been widely published. His family memoir, The Hare with Amber Eyes (2010), has won many literary prizes including the RSL Ondaatje Prize and the Costa Biography Award and has been translated into nearly 30 languages. His second book, The White Road was published in 2015. Other books include The Pot Book (2011), 20th Century Ceramics (2003) and de Waal’s critical study on Bernard Leach (1997).
De Waal was made an OBE for his services to art in 2011. In 2015 he was awarded the Windham-Campbell Prize for non-fiction by Yale University. He is a Senior Fellow of the Royal College Art and Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He has also received Honorary Doctorates from University of the Arts London, University of York, University of Nottingham, Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Sheffield. De Waal has been on the Advisory Committee for The Royal Mint since 2012 and is currently a Trustee for The Saturday Club Trust and the V&A.
