Are you a curator or have an interest in curating? Join us to discuss ephemerality, preservation and other challenging issues of exhibiting artworks.
This Study Day will focus on the New Perspectives exhibitions, a series of contemporary art commissions curated by Rose Lejeune that draw inspiration from rarely exhibited works from the Victoria Gallery & Museum collection. These works are thus given a ‘new perspective’.
In the first part of the day, together with curator Rose Lejeune and independent academic Dr Rebecca Gordon, we will discuss issues that arise when setting new ephemeral and process-based artworks in dialog with historical artefacts, as is the case in the New Perspectives exhibition.
In the second half of the day there will be the unique opportunity to visit Phoebe Cummings’ Model for a Common Room together with the artist. She will explain how she made the work entirely in raw clay and how it engages with the museum’s collection. Later artist Ludovica Gioscia will speak about her Giant Decollages, architectural interventions created by layering numerous hand printed and custom wallpapers that get subsequently ripped back in order to reveal the strata underneath.
The day will conclude with a panel discussion with art historian and philanthropist Sarah Elson, who will talk about her project ‘Launch Pad’ as a new model for exhibiting artists in a domestic setting.
