Collecting Performance is a collaborative seminar run through the Contemporary Art Society’s Subject Specialist Network for Contemporary Art, in partnership with Art Fund and The Gallery. The purpose of the event is to: reassess the status of collecting performance in museums today; examine a range of case studies and share models of best practice; bring together curators working in public collections to better understand the appetite for collecting performance across the UK; as well as the potential challenges in collecting ephemeral practice.

In 2014, New Walk Museum & Art Gallery in Leicester acquired their first performance work – Homemade Tasers by Monster Chetwynd, supported jointly by Art Fund and the Contemporary Art Society. This was the first time one of Chetwynd’s performances had been acquired for a public collection in the UK.  Five years later, the Art Fund and the Contemporary Art Society have planned a day of discussions and workshops led by artists, curators and international scholars. We will look at current collecting practices and identify those museums interested in acquiring performance works for their collections. Confirmed speakers include artists Janice Kerbel and Paul Maheke; Dr. Sabine Breitwieser and curators from the CAS and the Art Fund networks.
