The Contemporary Art Society has recently started a new fund for acquiring ceramics: the Jackson Tang Ceramics Award. This ambitious scheme, to which both curators from craft and from visual arts can apply, has prompted further discussions about the reasons, the significance and the outcomes of a media-based practice.

Clay has specific techniques and its own jargon, teachings and residencies – independent from the visual arts – but also has many commonalities worth exploring. Within the long lasting institutional, categorical and cultural distinctions between visual arts and craft, we hope to discuss if those barriers matter any longer and to unravel the points in common between disciplines.

Throughout the day, we will explore the art of clay as a hybrid, collaborative and interdisciplinary practice. Confirmed speakers include author, historian and craft thinkers Tanya Harrod and Alison Britton; curators Sarah Griffin and James BeightonAndrew Renton, Keeper of Art National Museum of Wales; Adam Sutherland, Director Grizedale arts; gallerist and ceramicist Tommaso Corvi-MoraAlun Graves, Senior Curator – Ceramics & Glass, V&A; Isabella Smith, Assistant Editor at Ceramic Review and artists Aaron AngelNao MatsunagaAneta Regel and Richard Slee.

There will be a curator-led tour of York’s CoCA collection which highlights and celebrates British Studio Ceramics and is amongst the most important in the UK.
