Join us on 30 June 2014 when artist Tania Kovats will be in conversation with Professor Gerry Gilmore from the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge.

The landscape and our relationship with it informs all of Tania Kovats’ practice. Encompassing sculpture, installation, drawing and time-based works; Kovat’s ambitious work often addresses the role of landscape in the formation of identity. Major projects have included Meadow (2007), in which a wildflower meadow was transported from Bath to London via the inland waterways system and All The Sea (2012-2014), a collective piece, that invited individuals from around the world to help assemble the world’s sea water in one place.

This talk marks the end of Tania Kovats yearlong Residency at North West Cambridge working with Professor Gerry Gilmore, at the Institute of Astronomy. Kovats has produced a spectacular sculpture entitled ‘One Billion Objects in Space’ in response to her profound admiration of the Institute’s remarkable role in the space observatory Gaia, which will map the Milky Way in unprecedented detail.  In this talk Professor Gilmore and Tania Kovats will look back over the year; discussing the culmination of Kovat’s work, the history of mapping the stars and the cultural implications of Gaia.

Contemporary Art Society’s Consultancy department continue to work in collaboration with the University of Cambridge on its public art programme for the University’s North West Cambridge Development. The Artist in Residency Programme provides the backbone for this strategy, appointing three artists each year to collaborate with University departments, producing a range of outcomes publicly displayed within the North West Cambridge site.

Tania Kovats was appointed to the first year of the residency programme alongside Hannah Rickards and Pope & Guthrie.
