Join us for this Case Study Day on archives and collection engagement taking place at The New Art Gallery Walsall.

 

Itinerary:

11.30 – 12.00 Julie Brown
Walsall’s Collections Curator Julie Brown will introduce their series of artists’ interventions, exhibitions and residencies around the Garman Ryan Collection and Epstein Archive.

 

12.00 – 12.30 Sarah Taylor Silverwood
Artist Sarah Taylor Silverwood will talk about her approach to working with an existing archive at The New Art Gallery Walsall, which produced the work Kathleen and Sally and how she introduced archival practices to the process of making a new work, Longbridge Mass Observation.

 

12.30 – 13.00 Grace Williams
Artist Grace Williams will be talking about the artwork she created whilst in residence at The New Art Gallery Walsall working with archival material on Sally Ryan, co-founder of the Garman Ryan collection as well as previous works inspired by the Thomas Glendenning Hamilton Photographic Archive in Canada and the on-going public project The Craftswoman’s Club, a response to the 19th Century ‘Craftsman’s Club’ founded in Birmingham, which excluded female participants.

14.00 – 14.30 Tour with Walsall’s Collections Curator Julie Brown and a chance to explore the collection

 

14.30 – 15.00 Rod Dickinson
Artist Rod Dickinson will describe different approaches to working with archives that include; disruption, irreverence and discontinuity. With recourse to a number of his artworks he will explore how reconfiguring and repurposing an archive can lend it new relevance and urgency.

 

15.00 – 15.30 Dr. Cliff Lauson
Another perspective on using archives as raw material will be offered by Dr. Cliff Lauson, Curator at the Hayward Gallery. He will give us a preview of the gallery’s current archival project that involves digitising and presenting selections from its fifty years of exhibition history.

 

15.30 – 16.00 Panel Discussion
