Centred around the ongoing discussion towards the reimagining of art institutions, this Case Study Day examines the ways in which museums and galleries can become active civic agents and spaces operating within society. It is drawn from Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art’s recent relaunch as a ‘useful museum’, an organisation constructed around use value and deriving its meaning from the sum actions of all of its users and constituencies.
The Case Study Day addresses proposals for public engagement beyond established models of representation and participation, in which citizenry and usership are positioned at the core of missions and programmes. Topics include the social function of art, co-production of projects with people, redistribution of authorship, involvement of artists in community building, and the integration of creativity into ordinary life. Speakers include:
Speakers include Barby Asante, artist, London; Viviana Checchia, Public Engagement Curator, Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow; Jo Hunter, Associate, New Citizenship Project, London; Sally Tallant, Director, Liverpool Biennial.
The event is open to all and particularly suited for professionals working within art institutions and local authorities who are concerned with exploring diverse audience participation and finding new forms of working collaboratively with local groups. It is also of interest to those exploring in the political potential of creative practices and the ethics of the art world.
