For the spring exhibition in the outdoor space of The Economist Plaza at 25 St James’s Street, Mark Pearson presented Malm/Swamp Thing, a large-scale figurative sculpture assembled from Ikea office furniture.
Mark Pearson applied his form of DIY vandalism to public sculpture, taking three items of Ikea furniture from the Malm range and dramatically re-configuring its elements to make a free-standing form.
Pearson says he makes sculptures that are caught in the act of transformation or mutation: frozen during an attempt to assert crass statements of cultural identity or a hollow sense of mythic grandeur.
