For the second half of the summer, in the plaza of The Economist Tower, Cathie Pilkington will present a new work entitled Homunculus.

Like other characters and animals in Pilkington’s work, this painted fibreglass manikin employs a carefully rendered realism to an animated and engaging effect. References to traditional and commemorative sculpture are mixed with more playful associations of popular ornaments and collectables.

Placed in the centre of The Economist Plaza this diminutive character is an unexpected presence. Whilst the scale of the figure suggests isolation and vulnerability, his nonchalant stance and snappy dress presents an unsettling image of a child ready for the corporate world.

Pilkington has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad. Recent and forthcoming projects include: Emporium, Domobaal, London (2003); Captive Bred, Bolton City Art Gallery (2003); Off The Leash, Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield (2003); and Flock, Model Niland Centre, Sligo, Ireland (2003).
