Artist Talk, Exhibition Tour, North Member Programme

Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art
Centre Square
Middlesbrough, TS1 2AZ

Join us in conversation with artist Derek Eland to discuss his exhibition, Diary Rooms, which is showing at mima.

Diary Rooms is the result of Derek Eland’s time as an official war artist in Afghanistan in 2011. The artist visited Afghanistan to create a ‘Diary Room’ experience for front line soldiers, both British and Afghan, by providing them with blank cards and offering them the opportunity to write down their immediate thoughts. The exhibition at mima recreates this diary room in the context of the gallery.

Derek Eland’s work is primarily focused on engaging with people about what it is like to ‘be human’ in stressful and difficult situations. Derek will be speaking about his extraordinary life, practice and acclaimed exhibition Diary Rooms. The In Conversation will be followed by an opportunity for the audience to ask their own questions and tour Diary Rooms with Derek.

Derek will also be signing copies of his book Diary Rooms, available from mima shop.
