This Case Day Study, in conjunction with the exhibition Speech Acts at Manchester Art Gallery, will explore the definitions of “decolonising” and “collections” – applying those notions to the museum in a thoughtful, engaged and reflective way. Speakers will consider past and current attitudes within UK institutions to constructively connect their collections with ideas of history, colonialism, identity and community.

Together with museum professionals, academics and artists we will discuss and interrogate the role of museums throughout examples of acquisitions, exhibitions, partnerships and alliances. Key note by Professor Catherine Hall, Chair Emerita of the Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership, UCL; presentations by artists Lubna Chowdhary and Marysia Lewandowska; curators Kate Jesson from Manchester Art Gallery and Jenny Dirksen from the Hamburger Bahnhof.

The exhibition Speech Acts is presented in partnership with the Black Artists & Modernism (BAM) Research Project.
