Last year saw the creation of two exciting new developments in contemporary art in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
First, the formation of Berwick Visual Arts, a new initiative that brings existing arts venues, potential new venue partners, and the wider visual arts community together, assured the future of both The Granary Gallery and the Berwick Gymnasium as venues for art exhibitions. The creation of the Gymnasium Residencies will continue the tradition of major, long-term artist residencies in the town, with Swedish artist Cecilia Stenbom being awarded the first residency in this new partnership between Berwick Visual Arts and the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival.
Second, across the Tweed, on the banks of the river, The Berwick Watchtower, is a brand new gallery and arts centre. The venue hosts a permanent display of paintings by the late Ian Stephenson RA, as well as regular exhibitions, concerts and performances. As well as Stephenson’s paintings, the gallery exhibits many works from his own collection: from abstract works by John Hoyland, to paintings, prints and drawings by David Hockney, John Bellany, Richard Hamilton and many others, as well as many 19th century watercolours and oils of local scenes.
