Edmund de Waal (b. 1964, Nottingham, UK) is best known for his large-scale installations of porcelain vessels, which have been exhibited in many museums around the world. Much of his recent work has been concerned with ideas of collecting and collections, and how objects are kept together, lost, stolen, and dispersed. His work comes out of a dialogue between Minimalism, architecture, and sound and is informed by his passion for literature.
De Waal studied English at Cambridge and trained as a ceramicist in both England and Japan. His work has been exhibited throughout the UK and internationally, with recent exhibitions including Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (2016); Royal Academy, London (2015) and The Turner Contemporary, Margate (2014). He is currently showing a new exhibition, Psalm, as part of the 58th Venice Biennale, and is presenting his work in the first exhibition of contemporary art in the permanent galleries of the Frick Collection, New York.
The Contemporary Art Society has acquired his work for Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford (2000), The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent (2004) and The Pier Arts Centre, Orkney (2016).
De Waal is also a writer, having published The Hare with Amber Eyes (2010) and The White Road (2015).
