Newcastle-based artist Edmund Francis is fascinated by the everyday man-made objects that we hardly notice. He uses changes in scale and shifts attention from an object’s use to its appearance, or vice versa. Through this, he examines and re-presents the manufactured object, making sculptures that engage with the processes of the design industry and that question our attitudes to our surroundings, fashions and taste.
His work, Anglepoise (7x), was featured in the 2011 Durham Lumiere. It is an exaggeration of an iconic piece of everyday design – a working scale model, seven times the size of the typical lamp that sits on countless desks in offices and studies.
This autumn’s exhibition, More, features new commissions made specifically for DLI Art Gallery and Museum. Both critical and celebratory, Francis’ work owes much to industrial and commercial design, fashion and consumer trends.
Join us for the opportunity to hear the artist talk about his work in the context of his exhibition.
