Artist Talk – Clunie Reid

18 November 2014

Artist Talk, PROJECTS

Contemporary Art Society
59 Central Street
London, EC1V 3AF

We are thrilled that Clunie Reid will discuss her work at the Contemporary Art Society as part of the PROJECTS programme.

Reid employs a degraded, deskilled approach to analyse and comment upon commodity status and industrial standardisation across her practice. Found and staged images are subject to intense re-workings through an arbitrary combination of digital manipulation, collage and a diversity of printing processes; the visual information built and layered to achieve highly structured chaos.

Reid examines representations and relationships between the internal and external, image and text, perception and understanding, looking particularly at advertising imagery. A contemporary idea of beauty is challenged and dismantled by the artist’s use of cheap materials and direct interventions on the surface of works with black markers, acts of apparent sabotage that demystify the highly-constructed visuals of the mass media. For their presentation, images are printed directly on aluminium without being laminated, gaffer-taped to the wall and arranged to make a non-hierarchical, non-linear arrangement which can be scanned and negotiated in no particular order.

Clunie Reid, born 1971, lives and works in London. She graduated with a BA in Painting from Wimbledon College of Art (1992) and an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art (1995). Recent exhibitions include: In Pursuit of the Liquid, MOTINTERNATIONAL, London (2013); ICA Off-Site: A Journey Through London Subculture 1980s to Now, The Old Selfridge Hotel, London (2013); Open Heart Surgery, The Moving Museum, London (2013); Black Light, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012); Clunie Reid – Hannah Perry, Arcadia_Missa, London (2012); Art Now, Tate Britain, London (2010) and Free, New Museum, New York (2010). In 2009, she was the John Jones Prize Winner at the Zoo Art Fair. She is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Central Saint Martin’s and is represented by MOTINTERNATIONAL, London.
