BALTIC’s Project Space, B39
31–39 High Bridge
Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1EW United Kingdom

BALTIC39 is a new cultural hub for contemporary art located on High Bridge in Newcastle. The buildings house 33 artists’ studios; a new home for fine art students from Northumbria University’s Department of Art and Social Sciences and the top floor BALTIC project space, which offers artists and guest curators creative freedom to experiment and innovate, enabling them to stretch the boundaries of contemporary art practice.

Following the first three exhibitions in 2012 – SWITCH Selected by Phyllida Barlow; Andrew Miller: Dusk or Dawn and Jim Shaw: You think you own your stuff but your stuff owns you – Spring 2013 brings a solo exhibition of Matt Calderwood’s work.

Calderwood, who studied Fine Art at Newcastle College and Sunderland University and is now based in London, makes sculpture that explores the latent physical potential of materials and subsequent objects. His work has recently been presented at David Risley Gallery, Copenhagen, 2012; Galerie Paul Andriesse, Amsterdam; Dublin Contemporary, 2011; Simulaker, Nova Mesto, Slovenia, 2011, Quiet Revolution (Hayward Touring Exhibition), Milton Keynes Gallery, Milton Keynes, 2009 and Material Intelligence, Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, (and touring), 2009.

Join us for this out-of-hours opportunity to hear the artist talk about his work in conversation with Emma Dean, curator of the exhibition.
