Join us for exclusive tours of two new exhibitions at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland.
Firstly, Michael Mulvihill will lead a tour around his current exhibition, The Means and the Instruments. The exhibition brings together a series of delicate pencil drawings based on the Vulcan XL319 aircraft. Recalling his fascination with the Cold War, Mulvihill remembers growing up as a child in the Eighties, running home from school to see whether he could beat the ‘four minute’ attack warning that would signal nuclear annihilation. He failed, it took him 6 minutes. Within his exhibition, Mulvihill conflates global histories with a more personal tenor.
Secondly, George Vasey will provide an informal curator-led walk through of his second exhibition at NGCA, The Decorator and the Thief (…) . This exhibition convenes work from the Arts Council Collection alongside newly commissioned works that explore the intersection between art, design and craft. The Decorator and the Thief (…) asks us to consider the importance of collecting and how issues of taste, questions of judgement and ideas around beauty are ideologically bound. The exhibition includes works by: Keith Arnatt, Claire Barclay, Paul Becker, Angela Bulloch, CommonRoom, Peter Davies, Leo Fitzmaurice, Barry Flanagan, Ian Giles, Susie Green, Margaret Mellis, Jacqui Poncelet, Yelena Popova and Giorgio Sadotti.
