Purchased from the Redfern Gallery by The Right Hon. Frederick Leverton Harris (1864-1926) for the Contemporary Art Society, 1925; presented to Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums, 1936
In her youth Clara Klinghoffer often depicted members of her own family, particularly her six sisters (Fanny, Rose, Rachel, Bertha, Leah, and Hilda), who all modelled for her in natural poses in their East End home, but most frequently Rose (who also sat to the sculptor Jacob Epstein), and Rachel, whom the artist identified to Aberdeen Art Gallery in 1937 as the sitter for this portrait.
