In 1942, during WW2, Frances Hodgkins was living at Corfe Castle, a village in Dorset, England. She showed recent work, alongside Picasso and other contemporaries, at the Lefevre Gallery in London between March to April 1943 where Tate Director and CAS Executive Committee member John Rothenstein (1901-1992) purchased this gouache for the Contemporary Art Society.
