Biography

Camden Art Centre, on the corner of Arkwright Road and Finchley Road in Hampstead, North London, was originally built as a public library. It was opened in 1897, facilitated by the benefactor, Sir Henry Harben (1823-1911), Deputy Chairman of the Prudential Assurance Company. When the library moved south to Swiss Cottage the arts centre was founded in 1965. It provided the local community with classes in painting, life drawing, pottery, printing and basic design. The first exhibition, The Artist at Work, was held a year after the Centre was established.
