Philip Harris Giddens (1898 - 1974)

Biography

Philip Harris Giddens (b. Cuthbert, Georgia, USA 1898 - d. Miami, Florida 1974) was a noted American artist and etcher who had studios in both New York and Palm Beach. He went to Columbus High School in 1916 and in 1920 from the Georgia School of Technology with a degree in architecture.  While at Georgia Tech he was a member of the Tech Marionettes, a drama theatre club as well as the glee club.  He was known there as Dizzy.  He adapted a brilliant etching technique to portraiture. The director of the Columbus Museum in his hometown saluted him as a "great gentleman, superb artist and architect". He was a soldier in the First World War and returned to Europe many times afterwards, including studying architecture as a fellow of the American Field Service. He re-enlisted in World War II in the US Engineers designing camouflage. His works have been exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Chicago Art Institute, among others.
