Philip Leslie Moffat Ward (1888 - 1978)

Biography

Philip Leslie Moffat (b. Worcester, UK 1888 - d. 1978), one of earliest screenprinters in Britain, moved with his parents to Bournemouth in 1895, where he attended the art school, also studying later at the Royal Academy Schools and was a gold medalist, National Competition (1909-10). From 1913 Moffat taught at the Southern College of Art, Bournemouth, becoming senior assistant until his retirement in 1953. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1915 and also at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers of which he was a fellow.  He had a solo exhibition at the Red House Art Gallery, Christchurch, Hampshire and in 1956 at the Eastbourne and Hastings galleries, where his work is in their collections. The Russell Coates Gallery, Bournemouth, held a retrospective exhibition in 1978.
