Frank Charles Medworth (1892 - 1948)

Biography

Artist, wood engraver and teacher. Born in Southwark, London and attended school in Brighton, Sussex. From 1912 studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. Served in WWI with the King's African Rifles in East Africa. Continued his studies in 1919 at the Westminster Technical Institute and School of Art, and taught there 1923-34. Also taught at City of Hull College ofArts and Crafts, 1934-38. Exhibited with the South London Group, the English Wood Engraving Society and the Royal Academy. His first solo exhibition held at the Goupil Gallery, 1929. He left England with his family in 1938 for a post at East Sydney Technical College, Australia. 1944-5, was acting Director of the 19. He exhibited extensively in Australia, sharing two exhibitions with his wife, Muriel Doris Anderson, in 1941 and 1947. He was author of three books: 'Animal Drawing', 1934; 'Perspective', 1936; 'Figure Drawing', 1940. He died in Mexico City. In addition to the British Museum, his work is held in the V&A Museum, the Southwark Art Collection in London and in many major collections in Australia.
