(Thomas) Leonard Bousfield Huskinson (1905 - 1974)

Biography

Leonard Huskinson (b. Nottingham, UK 1905 - d. Taunton, Devon, UK 1974) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1923–5. He was art master at Radley College and while there had a solo show at the Beaux Arts Gallery in 1934. The catalogue notes that he “showed more than ordinary artistic promise” while at his school, Oundle, and that at the Slade had “come under the direct influence of Professor [Henry] Tonks.

”At the time of his show Huskinson had lived for three years at Woodstock, Oxfordshire, nearby Blenheim, providing “landscape subjects and a series of watercolour drawings of the old gardens with Baroque architecture.” He re-entered the Slade for one term in 1937–8. Huskinson became an examiner, eventually chief examiner, for the Oxford and Cambridge Joint Board.

He illustrated various books, including Phineas Redux, 1951, for the Oxford University Press’s Anthony Trollope. A fine example of his draughtsmanship is his incisive Girl’s Head, in the manner of Wyndham Lewis, in the British Council collection, illustrated in the PS centenary volume, 2000. Huskinson took part in mixed shows at the RA Summer Exhibition and Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery, which acquired three pictures by him.
