Tom Chadwick (1912 - 1942)

Biography

Tom Chadwick (b. Jamaica 1912 - d. El Alamein, Egypt 1942) studied at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, 1932-6, run by Iain Macnab (1890-1967). He was killed in action in WW2. He was a member of the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers in 1933 and elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1935. He travelled to Spain and Bali during 1933-5. He taught at Westminster School of Art from 1936 and the same year was elected to the Society of Artist-Printmakers. During the period 1932-38 he cut some 20 wood engravings and his work is held in the Ashmolean Museum and Bodleian Linrary, Oxford, and the Whitworth Museum Manchester. In 1938, he produced illustrations for The Christ-child by P. C. Boutens (Samson Press).
