Biography
Gareth Fisher (b. Keswick, Cumbria, UK 1951) attended Edinburgh College of Art (1969–76). He went on to live in Dundee where he lectured in sculpture at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. From 1978 Fisher showed at New 57 Gallery, of which he was chairman, 1979–80, and Talbot Rice Gallery, both in Edinburgh; Artists’ Space Gallery in New York; Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax; Hatton Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne; Camden Arts Centre; and Third Eye Centre, Glasgow. A 1986 solo exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, toured Scotland and later a solo show at Galleria Antonia Jannone, Milan, Italy, 1998. From 1984–6, Fisher was chairman of the Blackness Public Arts Programme, Dundee, where The McManus holds his work. He was initally influenced by the American sculptor Donald Judd, but developed his mature work which was built in plaster and used found material and could take some time to complete, to reflect contemporary issues.
